Created for all the chai lovers out there, Chai Protein has become a staple in my kitchen! Chai Protein has a delish flavour and I find it super easy to incorporate into plenty of recipes in addition to my post workout shake!
Great flavour in a protein can often mean not so great ingredients, but thankfully Chai Protein have us health conscious consumers in mind! The protein is natural, gluten free, NON-GMO, high in protein, naturally sweetened with Stevia and contains nothing artificial! Therefore, these bliss balls are also everything above + a great source of natural fats, fiber and antioxidants!
Why Cacao over Cocoa?
You might be thinking that if you don’t have cacao on hand that the old cocoa in the back of the cupboard can be a make-do. Well, I’m not going to tell you it can’t, but it will certainly devalue the nutrition that these balls serve. As I Quit Sugar describes, raw cacao is actually cold-pressed, unfrosted cocoa beans. The fact that these beans undergo such processes means that the powder at the end maintains its living enzymes and original nutritional benefits. Cocoa is the processed, heated and less-nutritious version of the same bean and if you don’t shop carefully, you can find it added with milk solids, fats, oils and sugars.
So, the nutritional benefits of cacao, what exactly are they?
Well, cacao is super high in antioxidants and magnesium. Antioxidants and magnesium are arguably the most important for the modern Western diet – antioxidants for their defence against oxidation of cells (aka damage or in other words, cancer, heart & liver disease), and magnesium for its large presence in the body required for chemical reactions that keep our body functioning (currently one of the most deficient minerals in Western civilisation). It’s nutritional profile can be responsible for lowering insulin resistance, protecting the nervous system, reducing blood pressure and cardiovascular disease!
Researchers haven’t really distinguished the effects of cooked cacao versus cocoa and some articles are suggesting that high quality cocoa share some nutritional benefits, but at the end of the day, high grade cocoa is going to probably be more expensive than cacao (which is relatively cheap these days) so it’s best to just stick to the good stuff, and organic where possible of course!
The balls are the perfect snack for when you are on the go or pre/post workout! They are super easy to make and if you are too lazy to roll (I am so guilty of this) then just flatten the mixture into a pan and then slice into bit sized pieces – it will work and taste all the same!
Chai & Cacao Bliss Balls
– 1/2 cup Chai Protein
– 1/2 cup Oats
– 1/2 cup shredded coconut
– 2 tbsp cacao
– 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted
– 2 tbsp boiling water & 1 tbsp coconut sugar mixed together
– 1 tbsp chia seeds
– 1 tbsp water (to manage consistency of the balls, you may need to add some more water if your mixture is dry)
1. Firstly, add Chai Protein, oats and coconut into a high speed blender and blend until well combined (like a flour consistency)
2. Add all ingredients into a large mixing bowl and use your hands to combine well!
3. Depending on the consistency, you may need to add more than 1 tbsp water. Try and roll the mixture into balls and if it isn’t sticking well, then add some more water 🙂
4. Roll balls and then place in the fridge to set
