It’s not often that you can safely go to a cafe and know that everything is going to be gluten free, dairy free and refined sugar free. Or is it?
I know, I know, the Paleo Diet is more often than not getting a pretty bad wrap but you don’t have to be hard-core caveman eaters to enjoy the food at Paleo Cafe. In fact, it is most likely going to have what I believe most of you are looking for – wholesome, delicious and allergy free food for everyone.
I think the bad wrap for Paleo comes from the extreme views that are often portrayed. If you step back, however, Paleo is about going back to basics and for most of us, that is what we are trying to achieve. NO I have not turned paleo and am not encouraging you to do so, but sugar-free is an element of the Paleo diet, as is gluten-free and dairy-free, which is why I made the visit to Paleo Cafe to test out their lunch menu.
Located in Bulimba, Paleo Cafe is up against some tough competition. It appears the whole of Oxford Street are budding healthy foodies (note my previous real estate search and ideal dream of re-location), and while you may be strategising your weekends to make the rounds to see everyone, I am recommending Paleo Cafe be on that priority list and in particular, their Sweet Potato Carbonara be high up there too.
Ticking all of my boxes for lunch didn’t surprise me, but I cannot say I was well prepared. It took a while to decide between INCREDIBLE menu options like pulled pork, kale slaw and sweet potato chips, or the lamb, or the curry. Eventually I got there though, and only after I passed the specials board! Sweet potato noodle Carbonara – my oh my. With a dairy free sauce, cashew cheese, nitrate free bacon and free range chicken + mushies, I was in heaven. A side of the raw kale slaw with a turmeric aioli was also in order, to keep the veg intake high!
Though Paleo is of course meat-based (note, animals were obviously easier and more time-efficient to hunt), there are still gluten free options – take the vegetable frittata or pumpkin salad for example. Super proud to see that cavemen were fond of the #meatfreemonday trend also.
Okay and for dessert, you honestly have not lived if you haven’t tried the Salted Caramel Smoothie – Dates, cashews, banana, maple syrup, sea salt and coconut milk, it’s soooooo good! My gal pal and I shared it on our way home instead of getting a take home treat, and it definitely did the job!
I am always so thankful for cafes like Paleo Cafe restoring my love for ‘milkshakes’ or ‘pasta’ without compromising my health choices and I’m sure you will be too!
Skip the diet, just eat healthy – as they always say!
